The rand effect · analysis

Why is gold so expensive in South Africa?

Mostly, it is not the gold. Gold is priced in US dollars all over the world, and the rand gold price is simply that dollar price multiplied by the USD/ZAR exchange rate. So when the rand weakens, the rand gold price climbs even if dollar gold has not moved at all. Fine gold is R2 195,95 a gram here today not because South African gold is special, but because the rand is cheap. Gold is the same bar everywhere; the currency is the variable.

Rand gold vs dollar gold · indexed, 2011 = 100 annual average

The gap between the two lines is the rand. In 2016 the dollar gold price had fallen to 80 on this scale, below where it started, yet rand gold stood at 161: every point of that gap was the rand losing value, not the metal gaining it. After 2023 the lines climb together, because that leg was driven by the metal.

Two regimes, not one slogan

The honest version of this story has two halves, and anyone who tells you only one is selling you something. From 2011 to 2016 it was a currency story. The dollar gold price fell hard, around a fifth over those five years, yet the rand gold price rose by roughly 61 percent, because the rand almost halved against the dollar over the same stretch. The sharpest leg came in December 2015, when the rand crashed after the finance minister was fired. The metal was getting cheaper in dollars; South Africans were paying more, purely because of the currency.

From 2023 to 2025 it was the opposite. The dollar gold price climbed about 77 percent, from roughly 1,941 to 3,432 dollars an ounce, while the rand actually firmed a little. So the record rand prices of that period were almost entirely the metal, and a stronger rand quietly shaved a few points off. This is the counter-case, and publishing it is the point: the rand cuts both ways, and in 2020 to 2021 a recovering rand pulled the rand gold price down even as dollar gold rose.

Gold as a rand hedge, with the failures left in

Over the long run, rand gold has been a powerful store of value precisely because the rand has lost so much value. From 2000 to 2024 the rand gold price rose about 22 and a half times, while South African consumer prices rose about 3.4 times, so gold roughly six-and-a-half times outran inflation, close to 8 percent a year in real terms. But it is volatile and it does fail for years at a stretch: from 2020 to 2022 rand gold gained under 1 percent while inflation ran to 12 percent, so it lost about 10 percent of its real value over that window. A hedge, yes; a smooth one, no.

The takeaway is simple. When you see a scary rand gold number, ask which half is talking: the metal, or the rand. Today's exact split moves with the live feed; the board carries the current price, and the methodology sets out where every figure comes from.

Figures are annual averages and indicative, not intraday. Rand gold per ounce is computed as the US dollar gold price times the USD/ZAR rate. Dollar gold annual averages are LBMA-based via a secondary aggregator and should be re-confirmed against LBMA or the World Gold Council before any single year is quoted to the dollar. Common questions

The rand gold price, answered

Why is gold so expensive in South Africa?
Mostly it is not the gold, it is the rand. Gold is priced in US dollars worldwide, and the rand gold price is that dollar price multiplied by the USD/ZAR exchange rate. When the rand weakens, the rand gold price rises even if the dollar gold price has not moved. Gold is not dearer here than anywhere else; the rand is cheaper.
Is the high rand gold price because of the metal or the currency?
It depends on the period. From 2011 to 2016 the dollar gold price fell about a fifth, yet the rand gold price rose because the rand collapsed: that was a pure currency story. From 2023 to 2025 the dollar price nearly doubled while the rand was steady, so that record was almost pure metal. Both halves are true, which is why we show the split rather than a slogan.
Will the gold price come down in rands?
The rand gold price can fall two ways: if dollar gold falls, or if the rand strengthens. In 2020 to 2021 a recovering rand pulled the rand gold price down even as dollar gold rose. We do not forecast prices; we show what has driven them so you can read the next move for yourself.
